 PROVERBS OF SOLOMON 

Grow in Wisdom

I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. 

When you walk your steps will not be hampered; when you run you will not stumble. 

Proverbs4:11-12

Intro: There is a very creative and ingenious person, a friend of mine, who retailored a few old clothes that she had in her closet. She was able to do this for herself and her husband because she understood about clothing design and how it all fits together, plus she has a keen eye for style and fashion. The results of this prudent stewardship of their old clothes is now they have a closet full of re-tailored sportswear with a little spendable cash.

Prudent stewardship of my friends household is one small example of wisdom in action. My aim in this study is for you and I to grow in our understanding of what biblical wisdom looks like in action. And we can do this by studying biblical illustrations of what wisdom in action actually looks like. The end results will be that our understanding will grow in respect to wisdom.

Grow in wisdom:
"Turn your ear to wisdom, apply your heart to understanding, for the LORD gives wisdom. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair, for wisdom will enter your heart." Proverbs2:2

Wisdom in action: My top ten picks:

1-Jesus Christ: Emmanuel; God with us and the redemption of the human race the wisdom of God.

2-Noah: The building of the Ark and every plank of wood, each swing of the hammer, all of the
pitch laid in the seams and joints of the Arc - the wisdom and faith of Noah in action.

3-Abraham: Willing to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice to God the wisdom and faith of Abraham.

4-Moses: Confronted Pharaoh and said, "Let my people go" - the wisdom and faith of Moses.

5-David: He did not kill king Saul even though he had the opportunity the wisdom of David.

6-Esther: She saved Gods people from an evil plan - the wisdom and courage of Esther.

7-The twelve disciples: Their faithfulness and obedience unto Jesus Christ - wisdom in action.

8-John the Baptist: Said, "He must increase but I must decrease."the wisdom of John in action.

9-Mary, Martha's sister: While Martha worked, Mary listened to Jesus teach - wisdom in action.

10-Jonah: Said, "Salvation is of the LORD." - wisdom that comes from a contrite heart.

Practical wisdom: "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act." Proverbs3:27

Give your wife a big hug and say, "I love you honey", I do all the time.

Will you or won't you help your kids with their homework tonight--yes, of course I will!

Be mindful of and be respectful to your co-workers--they maybe having a bad day too.

Say or do something nice for your neighbor--don't wait until tomorrow, do it today.

Wisdom Illustrated: "On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand." By Edward Mote.

This wonderful chorus above is based on the teaching of Jesus in the parable of "The wise and foolish builders."The clearest notes that I could think of to end this brief study of biblical wisdom would have to come from the Master teacher Himself, Jesus Christ. 
                                 

The Parable of: "The Wise and Foolish Builder"

                                                                           Matthew 7:24-29                                              

     "Therefore anyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught as one having authority and not as their teachers of the law.

Conclusion and application: Praise the Lord for His great love and mercy, He paid a debt He did not owe, I owed a debt I could not pay. Christians have built their house on the rock, Jesus Christ. The goal is Christ likeness, and to grow in wisdom.

  a. To consider, understand, make wise; give attention to, ponder -- occurs 63 times.

  b. It is used in: Proverbs10:5; "He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son."

2-Good: Hebrew transliteration; Towb - phonetic spelling; Tobe, (adjective). (Strong's).

 a. It is used in the widest sense; beautiful, best; as a noun; a good man, a good woman.

 b. It is used in Genesis1:3; "and God saw that the light was good." - occurs 562 times.
