Book of Jonah 1A

Portugal Sailing Vessel

Book of Jonah

The Prodigal Prophet

Intro: Jonah is a type of Christ and the similarities can be seen by way of contrast throughout this wonderful book. He was a prophet during the reign of JeroboamII 793-758BC and he prophesied the restoration of Israel’s border north and south to the time of King David and King Solomon, 2K14:25. He was from Gath-Hepher not far from Nazareth which means he was a Galilean and the pharisees were wrong because there was a prophet who came from Galilee. The name Jonah means dove and his fathers name Amittai means truth. I could not find any information regarding his father which means that Jonah could be the son of a prophet, (or not).

Author: Unknown, it could be Jonah; there are arguments for both sides.
Theme: The sovereign rule of God over His creation and mankind.
Setting: Nineveh; Capital City of the Assyrian Nation. Eastern
bank of the Tigres River; modern-day northern Iraq, Kirdistan.
Time: Approximately 760 BC.

Jonah pursues the wrong path

Chapter One

Part-A

Title: Jonah pursues the wrong path; 1:1-3
Subject: Run to God not away from Him.
Text: Jonah1:1-3

1) “The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying; 2) Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me." 3) But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fair and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.”

1) The word of the LORD: - "The word", Hebrew translation: "dabar" (noun m). Def; singular speech, discourse, a saying, the sum of that which is spoken (Strong’s-1697). This was a divine utterance from Yahweh to Jonah that will introduce miraculous prophetic events. "Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.” Amos3:7

came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying: Jonah is God’s missionary of mercy to the city of Nineveh. The blessing's of God were always meant to include the entire world and every human being; “and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Gen12:3. His message of salvation is meant to have an international audiience; “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face shine upon us so that your ways may be known on earth your salvation among all nations; so that all the ends of the earth will fear Him" Psalm67:1,2,7

2) Arise, go to Nineveh the great city: - “Arise”, Hebrew translation: “qum” (verb). Def; stand up and let us go. His mission will take him away from the comforts of his home country and put him directly into harms way. One author stated that, going into the capital City of Nineveh was like going into the jaws of a lion. The Book of Nahum tells about the cruelty of the City of Ninenevh ”Woe to Nineveh the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims; All who hear of your destruction will clap their hands for joy. Where can anyone be found who has not suffered from your continual cruelty." Nahum3:1,19

and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before me: The message from Jonah to Nineveh is urgent and sobering; “40 days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The city that he will cry against is known for being cruel beyond imagination and their wickedness has now come to the attention of the Sovereign ruler of the universe. Historically the Assyrian nation, present-day Iraq, has been Israel’s nemesis. The city must repent and be saved or remain under God’s judgment and parish and Jonah is God’s messenger of Good News.

3) But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD: Jonah has a few obvious personal problems and spiritual issues with Yahweh that will cause him to suffer needless setbacks to his life and ministry.

Application: Every Christian has a special calling from God to serve Him. Once you and I are born again and we seek God’s kingdom our gifts and calling will become known. Jonah’s calling is already know and has been made sure; The primary lesson we should all learn from the life and ministry of Jonah is;  “when in doubt, run to God, not away from Him.” Not my will, but, "Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." Matthew6:10

Conclusion: I am still learning to do this in my life with much more frequency and better results; The Soverign God of the universe is worthy to be trusted which is what Jonah and you and I will see in this study. I would love to here from anyone of you, about your views on the subject of trusting in God. Running to God is always the best direction to go - don't you agree.

The Christian Pilgrim

Eagles Landing

The Christian Pilgrim

A Sermon by: Jonathan Edwards
Dedicated to my Sister Carol

Dated: September, 1733; 1753. Preached at Boston and at New Haven; preached to Stockbridge Indians.

Quote: That this life ought to be so spent by us, as to be only a journey or pilgrimage towards heaven.

SECTION I

HERE I would observe,

That we ought not to rest in the world and its enjoyments, but should desire heaven. We should “seek first the kingdom of God.” (Mat. 6:33) We ought above all things to desire a heavenly happiness; to be with God and dwell with Jesus Christ. Though surrounded with outward enjoyments, and settled in families with desirable friends and relations; though we have companions whose society is delightful, and children in whom we see many promising qualifications; though we live by good neighbors, and are generally beloved where known; we ought not to take our rest in these things as our portion. We should be so far from resting in them, that we should desire to leave them all, in God’s due time. We ought to possess, enjoy and use them, with no other view but readily to quit them, whenever we are called to it, and to change them willingly and cheerfully for heaven.

A traveler is not wont to rest in what he meets with, however comfortable and pleasing, on the road. If he passes through pleasant places, flowery meadows, or shady groves, he does not take up his content in these things, but only takes a transient view of them as he goes along. He is not enticed by fine appearances to put off the thought of proceeding. No, but his journey’s end is in his mind. If he meets with comfortable accommodations at an inn, he entertains no thoughts of settling there. He considers that these things are not his own, that he is but a stranger, and when he has refreshed himself, or tarried for a night, he is for going forward. And it is pleasant to him to think that so much of the way is gone.

To go to heaven fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, children, or the company of earthly friends, are but shadows. But the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams, but God is the sun. These are but streams, but God is the fountain. These are but drops, but God is the ocean. — Therefore it becomes us to spend this life only as a journey towards heaven, why should we labor for, or set our hearts on anything else?

“Let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Heb. 12:1) Though the road be difficult and toilsome, we must hold out with patience, and be content to endure hardships. Though the journey be long, yet we must not stop short, but hold on till we arrive at the place we seek. Nor should we be discouraged with the length and difficulties of the way, as the children of Israel were, and be for turning back again. All our thought and design should be to press forward till we arrive.

SECTION 2

The future world was designed to be our settled and everlasting abode. There it was intended that we should be fixed, and there alone is a lasting habitation and a lasting inheritance. The present state is short and transitory, but our state in the other world is everlasting. And as we are there at first, so we must be without change. Our state in the future world, therefore, being eternal, is of so much greater importance than our state here, that all our concerns in this world should be wholly subordinated to it.

Labor to obtain such a disposition of mind that you may choose heaven for your inheritance and home, and may earnestly long for it and be willing to change this world, and all its enjoyments, for heaven. Labor to have your heart taken up so much about heaven, and heavenly enjoyments, as that you may rejoice when God calls you to leave your best earthly friends and comforts for heaven, there to enjoy God and Christ.

A Tribute to Carol

Isaiah 40:31

Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not
become weary.

"A Tribute to my Sister Carol"

This Christmas post is dedicated to my Angel Sister Carol who went home

to be with Jesus on December 23, 2014. I love you Carol I will miss you

with sweetest memories until we meet again.

"Love never fails"

Carol with her three beloved children
Mark, John and Chelsey

1 Corinthians 13

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

"Love never fails."

Jesus of Nazareth 1

Jesus of Nazareth

Immanuel

"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:
Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son,
and she will call His name Immanuel."
                                        Isaiah7:14

The virgin birth: The historic and authentic reality of the virgin birth is supported by numerous passages of scripture. It is my view that this was a genuine miracle and a sign to us from God based on my Christian faith and the clear evidence from the bible. The depth of the wisdom of the virgin birth is immeasurable and to deny the numerous pieces of evidence is to not believe in miracles or the wisdom of God, which to me is foolish.

Jesus Christ was begotten and not created the same way God created Adam and Eve or even angels. Christ was born of a woman like you and I but His Father is God and His conception was from the Holy Spirit. The Angel Gabriel spoke to Mary and said to her; "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will over shadow you." Lk1:35. The Angel of the Lord also spoke to Joseph in a dream and said. "What is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit." Matt1:20. Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Father. John1:14

Quote: The wonderful connection of two so infinitely differing natures in the unity of one person and how it was there affected; is an inquisition fitter for an Angelical intelligence, than our shallow capacity to look after, to which purpose we may also observe, that in the fabric of the Arc of the Covenant, the posture of the faces of the Cerubims toward the Mercy-seat, a type of our Savior, was such, as would point unto us, that these are things of which - "Angels desire to look into." 1Peter1:12 - By: James Ussher (1581-1656).

The bible teaches that Jesus was both God and man, "and the Word/God became flesh/Jesus" John1:14. The issue concerning the virgin birth is, "oringinal sin." Jesus is the perfect sinless man because the sin of Adam was not passed on to Him through birth, like it is for you and I. The evidence of scripture upholds the Deity and the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. If you wish to read more on this subject; Executable outlines.org, "Why I believe"

Biblical Definition: Immanuel; God with us. It is a Hebrew word signifying that God is with us. (Strong's).
Hebrew transliteration: Immanuel; It is a Proper Name, the name of a child, (noun/male). From im and el with the pronoun suffix us inserted;
With-us-is-God. occurs 3 times; once in Matt1:23, in Isaiah7:14, Isaiah8:8

------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion: Most fair-minded people will grant the fact that the bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ was virgin born. After you boil the cabbage down the argument then remains whether or not you believe what the bible teaches is true or false. From my Christian point of view the virgin birth is the wisdom of God but to the unbeliever it is foolishness.

Application: The Christian faith includes the belief in miracles, signs and wonders and the virgin birth is a part of that belief. The True Gospel is that Jesus Christ died for sinners like you and I, and I pray that God will open your spiritual eyes today that you may hear and believe the Good News.

Jesus of Nazareth 2

Nazareth Village, Israel

Jesus of Nazareth

His youth

"When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord they
returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became
strong He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him."(Luke2:39,40)

The City of Nazareth Today
Quote: "Today Nazareth is a town of about 60,000 people in northern Israel. About 88 miles north of Jerusalem. It is the capital of the northern
region of the country and the largest Arab city in Israel. It is situated among the southern ridges of the Lebanon Mountains, on the steep slope of
hill, about 14 miles from the Sea of Galilee and about 6 miles west from Mount Tabor. The modern city lies lower down upon the hill than the ancient
one. In Jesus' time Nazareth would have had a population of about 500. The majority of Nazarenes are Israeli Arabs, about 30-40 percent of which
are Christians, and the rest are Muslims.”(Sacred-destinations.com)

Village Life: As Morning begins at the home of Joseph and Mary the sweet aroma of bread cooking in the
wood burning oven fills the air. The family begins their day with prayer and devotions to the Lord. Someone
is outside feeding the chickens and someone has gone to fetch water at the well. Joseph and his son Jesus
are working in the wood shop by now or maybe helping a neighbor fix a broken wagon wheel, yet I surmise.

Ancient Nazareth: Biblical facts about Jesus and ancient Nazareth:
1) In Nazareth Jesus taught the people in their Synagogue,"and they were amazed.Matt13:54
2) The phrase Jesus of Nazareth occurs 17 times in the New Testament.
3) The Hebrew root word for Nazareth means branch which follows Isaiah's prophecy; that the Messiah will
come from a shoot a branch of King David. He grew up before him like a tender shoot and like a root out of
dry ground He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him nothing in his appearance that we should desi-
re him."Isaiah53:2. A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him." Isaiah11:1
4) Quote: The town of Nazareth was one of the most beautiful places in all of Galilee. From a hilltop in
Nazareth you can see the coast of Tyre and the blue waters of the Mediterranean. You can also see Mount
Carmel where Elijah struggled with the prophets of Baal. bible-history.com.

The silent years: Where was Jesus during this time period? This was a period of time beginning from his
youth to the time of His public ministry. Most biblical scholars are in agreement that after Jesus' adolesce-
nce he was most probably working as a carpenter between the ages of 12 to 30years old. When he was not
applying His trade He was most probably attending Synagogue learning and teaching the Law and the Proph
ets. This was also a time when Jesus would learn many lesson from nature that He would later use as a way
to teach you and I spiritual lessons in the form of a parable such as; The four soils, Matt13:3,
