Book of 1st John

Book of 1st John

Santa Cruz, California

Word of Life

Part-one

1John1:1-4

Intro: I love the Book of 1st John, if good things come in small packages, 1st John would be filled with diamonds even a field of diamonds. This wonderful book was one of the first books I read as a newborn Christian and brings to mind the warm fellowship that all Christians enjoy. The general purpose of this study is to grow spiritually identifying gems of truth and applying them to our daily life. In particular the intent of this study is to increase our spiritual discernment; concerning false teachers, 1John4:1, to recognize the spirit of the antichrist, 1John4:3, and to discern between "the spirit of truth and the spirit of error." 1John4:6. Introduction source here: www.gty.org/resources/bible introductions/1john

About the author: He was an Apostle of Jesus Christ and one of the chosen twelve, the son of Zebedee and Salome. Jesus gives John and his brother James the nickname of, Sons of Thunder, Mark3:17. He is commonly referred to as the disciple Jesus loved and whom Jesus gave instructions to care for His Mother. John19:26. He was an Evangelist, and Teacher. I believe the author of 1st John, 2nd John, 3rd John, including the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelations were written by the Apostle John.

Quote: The following is an excerpt from Henry Alford's, Greek Testament Critical Exegetical Commentary; "Whether then we approach the question of the authorship of this epistle, (and its consequent canonizing), from the side of external testimony, or of internal evidence, we are alike convinced that its claim to have been written by the Evangelist St. John, and to its place in the canon of scripture, is fully substantiated."
Theme and setting: Back to basics or the fundamentals of The Faith would be appropriate to say of John's writing. He explains in absolute terms what a true christian believes about the nature of God, 1Jn1:5, about sin, 1Jn1:8, about obedience, about love, 1Jn4:8. John the Apostle of Love was one of the first disciples called by Jesus and now in his senior years he is the last surviving apostle. He writes to you and I whom he refers to as, "My dear children." 1Jn2:1.

He was well know among the seven Churches of Asia Minor which he writes about in the Book of Revelations. He begins his letter with factual events; What was from the beginning what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands." John was an eyewitness of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and so his testimony is trustworthy, accurate and true. The first sentence of his Epistle, "What was from the beginning", is similar to the opening sentence of the Gospel of John, "In the beginning was the Word." Jn1:1

Time line: This type of book is called An Epistle; which are authoritative letters, written by apostles, and sent out to individual people or congregations. They are divided into two groups; Pauline epistles & general epistles of which is 1st John. This letter was likely written during Apostle John's senior years, late first century.

Quote: The English word "epistle" originated from a Latin word, epistola, that itself originated from a Greek word, pronounced epistole, that meant to send on. While the English word "pistol" originated from the same Latin version of the word, epistola, as "epistle," epistles were a means of delivering communication, not of delivering bullets." Text: 1John1:1
What was from the beginning, what we have heard,
what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked
at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life.

1) What was from the beginning: The incarnate, "Word of Life", Jesus Christ, who was with the Father in the beginning. John1:1. Bible scholars say this verse can refer to Messiah who was present at the beginning of creation in Genesis1:1, or the birth of Messiah, either interpretation is correct.

what we have heard, referring to himself using first person, plural pronouns; Some Theologian's teach that the plural pronouns used, ie; we, us and our, refer to those apostolic eyewitnesses of the earthly life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth and also inclusive eyewitness groups of people, ie; all of Jesus disciples.

What did they hear? They heard the voice of the Master Teacher. They heard His voice as He sat down and began to teach them saying, "Blessed are the poor in spirit; they heard Him when He broke bread with them in the upper room at the last supper saying, "This is My body do this in remembrance of Me. 1Corinthians11:24.

what we have seen with our eyes: The Apostle John was a follower of John the Baptist and witnessed the baptism of Jesus. He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting upon Jesus. Matthew3:16. John was present at the transfiguration of Jesus, Matthew17:1-7. He followed Jesus from the time of His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane all the way to Calvary.

What did they see? They saw God tabernacle among human beings. They saw Jesus Messiah who would save His people from their sin - The Lamb of God. John1:29. They were witnesses to all of the miracles, signs and wonders that were performed by Jesus. They saw Jesus have compassion on the multitudes and healing the sick and brokenhearted. Matthew11:3-5. They watched as Jesus demonstrated humility by washing their feet. And even today every christian can say; "Though you have not seen Him, you love Him." 1Peter1:8.

what we have looked at: "Look unto me and be saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God and there is none else." Isaiah45:22.  Many people
have ' looked ' at Jesus but then they walk away. John wants us to look to Jesus and be saved, so that we too will have fellowship with the Father
and with His Son Jesus Christ.

and touched with our hands: "Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh  and bones, as you see

I have." Luke24:39. I am reminded again that we serve a risen Savior.

concerning the Word of Life: "And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus." Luke24:2-3. Any first century christian hearing these inspired words of the Apostle John would be as blessed as you and I are today and given a joyful amen!

Proverbs4:11-12

Part-three: Grow in Wisdom

Intro: There is a very creative and ingenious person, a friend of mine, who retailored a few old clothes that she had in her closet. She was able to do this for herself and her husband because she understood about clothing design and how it all fits together, plus she has a keen eye for style and fashion. The results of this prudent stewardship of their old clothes is now they have a closet full of re-tailored sportswear with a little spendable cash.

Prudent stewardship of my friends household is one small example of wisdom in action. My aim in this study is for you and I to grow in our understanding of what biblical wisdom looks like in action. And we can do this by studying biblical illustrations of what wisdom in action actually looks like. The end results will be that our understanding will grow in respect to wisdom.

Grow in wisdom:
"Turn your ear to wisdom, apply your heart to understanding, for the LORD gives wisdom. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair, for wisdom will enter your heart." Proverbs2:2

Wisdom in action: My top ten picks:
1-Jesus Christ: Emmanuel; God with us and the redemption of the human race the wisdom of God.
2-Noah: The building of the Ark and every plank of wood, each swing of the hammer, all of the
pitch laid in the seams and joints of the Arc - the wisdom and faith of Noah in action.
3-Abraham: Willing to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice to God the wisdom and faith of Abraham.
4-Moses: Confronted Pharaoh and said, "Let my people go" - the wisdom and faith of Moses.
5-David: He did not kill king Saul even though he had the opportunity the wisdom of David.
6-Esther: She saved Gods people from an evil plan - the wisdom and courage of Esther.
7-The twelve disciples: Their faithfulness and obedience unto Jesus Christ - wisdom in action.
8-John the Baptist: Said, "He must increase but I must decrease."the wisdom of John in action.
9-Mary, Martha's sister: While Martha worked, Mary listened to Jesus teach - wisdom in action.
10-Jonah: Said, "Salvation is of the LORD." - wisdom that comes from a contrite heart.

Practical wisdom: "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act." Proverbs3:27
Give your wife a big hug and say, "I love you honey", I do all the time.
Will you or won't you help your kids with their homework tonight--yes, of course I will!
Be mindful of and be respectful to your co-workers--they maybe having a bad day too.
Say or do something nice for your neighbor--don't wait until tomorrow, do it today.

Wisdom Illustrated: "On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand." By Edward Mote.
This wonderful chorus above is based on the teaching of Jesus in the parable of "The wise and foolish builders."The clearest notes that I could think of to end this brief study of biblical wisdom would have to come from the Master teacher Himself, Jesus Christ.

The Parable of: "The Wise and Foolish Builder"

                                                                           Matthew 7:24-29

"Therefore anyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught as one having authority and not as their teachers of the law.

Conclusion and application: Praise the Lord for His great love and mercy, He paid a debt He did not owe, I owed a debt I could not pay. Christians have built their house on the rock, Jesus Christ. The goal is Christ likeness, and to grow in wisdom.

Proverbs part - 2

PROVERBS OF SOLOMON

Get wisdom

"The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out."
Proverbs18:15

Title: Proverbs of Solomon
Subject: Biblical Wisdom
Part-one: Got Wisdom
Part-two: Get Wisdom
Part-three: Grow in Wisdom

Intro: Quote:"Wisdom? Not just any kind of wisdom but Biblical wisdom. Many who attend Church don't seem to know what it is. Our popular culture doesn't even recognize that it exists. The education system rarely dispenses this kind of wisdom (in many places it is even illegal to teach Biblical wisdom). The entertainment news media totally ignores it." Biblicalwisdom.org.

The focus of this study is "Biblical wisdom" There is a narrow path of Biblical wisdom that leads to life and there is a wide path of worldly wisdom that leads to destruction. My intent in this study is to show, that by taking the narrow path of biblical wisdom, it is truly the smart guy thing to do. The purpose of this study is for you and I to have a better understanding of what Biblical wisdom is. The two fictional characters below were created by me, to illustrate biblical wisdom, by contrasting it with worldly wisdom. I am aware of the attributed bias of both characters.

Get wisdom: wisdom contrasted

I am the Fool Proper: I was born with a strong will and a determination to be number one. As I grew in stature and in the knowledge of our universe through observation and reflection, I then came to a conclusion about the existence of God. I have learned about life from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and I walk in the light of my own wisdom. To speculate about the existence of God is just plain foolish and stupid there is no God. I am the Captain of my ship and I will decide my own destiny and all will know that I am the Fool Proper.

I am the Wise Proper: I was born a wretched sinner and my only hope is God's redeeming love. As I grew in stature and in the knowledge of God who created the heavens and the earth I then began to walk humbly with my God. I have learned about life from the tree of life and I walk in the light and wisdom of my Lord and my God. "There is a river who's streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High." Psalm46:4

The path of the fool: "The fool say's in his heart, There is no God. Ps14:1. All foolishness is sin and to say there is no God is the pinnacle of foolishness. All creation speaks of the existence of God therefore the fool denies the evidence. "In all his thoughts there is no room for God." Wisdom is not hiding in the backroom of an old dusty book store. "Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; How long will you who are simple love your simple ways." Ps10:4. When an earnest soul seeks after God, at that time God will reveal Himself to that person.

The path of the wise: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge."Prov1:7. For every Christian the starting point of our relationship with an all powerful God is a sincere reverence of God whom we worship. Perfect love casts out fear. This is inocent child like respect given to our loving heavenly Father without any thought of punishment attached. "Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise; but the companions of fools will suffer harm. Sure! bad company corrupts good morals and birds of a feather flock together, we've all heard and believe these words of wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding." Prov4:7.

Conclusion: The path of wisdom has rewards for this life and the next. Abraham looked for a city; "whose builder and maker is God." Hebrews11:10.What will heaven be like? In heaven there will be no more; "Tears, death, mourning, crying, nor pain."  Rev21:4"The glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb."Rev21:23"The streets of the city are pure gold." Rev21:21. The tree of life, the crystal river are all a part of what heaven will be like.

Application: "Get wisdom" The more you and I learn about "Biblical wisdom" the less likely we are to buy into temptations, lying vanities and bad fruit = "Get wisdom" If you are seeking God you can pray to God for answers to the questions you may have, He is not far from any one of us. And you can also talk to a Christian who can answer your questions.
